Q: I was just put on Crestor for High Cholesterol. Mine is 296. How much will this drug lower it??
I was just told my cholesterol is 296 which is extremely high. They put me on Crestor. I am just curious how much the drug will lower my cholestorol by. Thank you for your advice!!

A: It depends on your dose and how you change your diet. With doses of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg daily Crestor reduce LDL-cholesterol by 45%, 52%, 55%, and 63%, respectively. Additional studies down with the 5mg and 10mg show results that are pretty close to the ones claimed by the manufacture. It also lowers lower triglycerides by 21- 43%. It is important that you eat a healthy diet in addition to taking your medication to get the maximum effect.

Q: I need accurate information about Crestor which I've been using for 2 years to decrease my cholesterol level.
someone told me ıt has seriously harmful side-effects especially on muscles.ıt that true?

A: Crestor is filtered and processed through your liver. You should have liver enzymes drawn every 6 months as well as your cholesterol. This will make sure that the medication itself is not harming your liver while trying to lower your cholesterol. As for muscles, a common side effect of a statin medication is muscle cramping. There has been a statin, Baycol, taken off of the market in the past for causing permanent damage to muscles, resulting in kidney problems. This occured in a very small amount of the population of patients that were taking it. If you are not having leg cramps, then the Crestor is not bothering your muscles. If you are, you can ask your doctor about Zetia, a new cholesterol medication that is not a statin and has had good results with people who are sensitive to statins. Bottom line is that a statin is the best route to lower your cholesterol if you can tolerate it. Your cholesterol being high is more risky then the medication itself.

Q: My doc won't prescribe Crestor in dose to split pill to save me money. What is the big deal?
My husband and I are both on Creston 10 MG. We can save $340 a year if our doc would prescribe 20 MG and we could split the pill. Doc won't agree to this, said we lose proper dosage. Don't understand as our insurance company sent us authorized letter to give to physician for this purpose. (One of the top Rated Hospital in Country) What can I do to persuade the doc as I don't want to change doctoros now. Only have till end of year to get in on the deal. Note: Crestor is not spelled correctly in details.

A: The deal is that he would have written one of you a prescription for twice the proper dose of this medication. If something Crestor-related happened to the person he wrote the scrip for, it screams lawsuit. I know it's not what you want to hear, but you're basically asking him to commit fraud.

Q: If I stop taking Crestor w/ docs permission, how long until the muscle pain/weakness stops?
I've been on in for almost 8 months and thought I could handle the muscle pain/weakness but it's getting too much to bear. Will it stop almost immediately?

A: Crestor is to treat High Cholesterol. I assume you have returned to your Doc to have your Cholesterol measured to first find if you are on the correct dose? Usually you see your Doc he takes a blood test, see you have High Cholesterol. The first option is a low fat diet, loose weight and then you should return to see if you can control the Cholesterol through your diet and exercise. If you cannot, then they usually ask about your Parents and Siblings and could be you have Hyperlipdemia which is a serious problem. Then they will prescribe the Crestor and after a few months you need to return to for another blood test to see how you are getting on. Could be your cholesterol has dropped, in which case they can reduce the Crestor, or put you on another Statin. Sometimes they can remove you from the drug treatment. However I would not advise 'anyone' to stop a prescribed treatment, without the permission of their Doctor, because you are risking heart attack, stroke, hardening of the arteries, the list goes on. It could be that you just need to change the brand of drug, or boost your good fats! Best of Luck

Q: among the most popular cholesterol medications, how does Crestor rate?
how does Crestor compare to other cholesterol medications?

A: Crestor IS generally the strongest statin. However, I haven't heard that it has more side effects or is "toxic". While statins do lower the level of CoQ10, studies have failed to show any benefit in taking CoQ10 supplements with a statin.

While we are on the subject, if you just started taking this med, are sure you need it? "Optimum cholesteral is 222 according to the research of Dr Hal Huggins and others. The death rate is lowest at this number."

Q: Shouldn't I drink grapefruit juice because I'm taking Crestor?
They say some statine groups react with grapefruit juice and lower its effect on cholesterol. Is it valid for crestor, too?Thank you;))

A: If you read the really tiny print in the monographs on Statin drugs, you will see that it takes more than half a gallon of grapefruit juice or more than 6 grapefruit per day to kick in the interaction for the average person taking those Statin Drugs. Grapefruit is supposed to also interact with Calcium Channel Blockers also.

Q: I feel like I have charliehorses in my foot or legs, can Crestor be causing it?
I know about the cholesterol lowering drugs causing joint pain, etc. rhabdomyolisis, etc. but don't know if this is anything like that. When I lie down I just get a crick in my foot or sometimes my lower leg. When I stand up it goes away.

A: Yes, it may be the Crestor. I had extreme muscle cramps in my calves while using Lipitor. The Dr. change it to Zocor and I haven't had them since. Each person reacts differently to these meds, but I do know that leg cramps is a side affect of most of them.
