Q: Does anyone know the long term effects of Nexium?
I have been on Nexium for 5 years for GERD. It really helps me alot and if I go off of it for more than 2 days, I get into alot of pain with hearburn and upset stomach. I am 30 years old and don't really like relying on a drug like this. Are there any long term side effects to this drug?

A: Hi I have been using Nexium for 4 years, and it is great drug, it stopped by heartburn and reflux problems . Recently I have found out that I have elevated liver enzymes. I have been trying all types of treatments but nothing was working, then a doctor friend asked me to stop Nexium and surprisingly in the last 2 months the toxic enzymes have been retreating. If u r using Nexium for a long time do get a liver function test just in case. I do believe it is great drug, I am suffering after stopping it but I also have to worry about my liver. good luck Sanjeev

Q: How should I take nexium?
So i finally saw my doctor and the conclusion is alcohol causes a temporary yet severe gastric issue. he prescibed me nexium and said 'take when needed' I have 2 weeks worth. The package says one a day. I am still eating yogurt, jello and popsicles instead of solid foods until i feel comfortable enough to digest them. I am wondering if taking it when needed will be as effective as taking it daily.

A: Nexium will do wonders for acid reflux, taken daily. Take the Nexium as the Dr prescribed. and call and ask if it would help you more if taken daily. OTC you may find Prilosac and it will not need a RX. Depending on what kind RX Coverage you may have. Call your Dr's office and see if they will agree to daily Nexium pill. and visit again once your RX runs out.

A: I have both GERD & Allergies. I take multiple medications for both. I think it's okay for you to take both. If you want to email me & tell me your allergy meds ,pls feel free to go to my profile.

Do they provide for any immediate relief, and if not, how many days before they start to have a noticeable effect?

Q: Why do we give Nexium to all patients in the psychiatric hospital?
Does it protect the stomach from gastro Intestinal bleeding from the other meds the doctors prescribe?

Q: I am taking Nexium for an ulcer, has anyone else had an ulcer and how long did it take to go away?
I did not have any tests to see if I had one. I started taking Nexium which blocks the acid in my stomach and the pain is better but it still hurts a little sometimes. It has been four weeks since I've been taking the Nexium. It is a mild stomach ache that comes back about every two or three days.

A: There are several issues here. Firstly Nexium is the best treatment to control acid reflux. Secondly you should be tested for the Heli Bacteria which causes ulcers. Then there is a treatment to kill that bacteria and get rid of the ulcers for you if you have the bacteria in your system. It pays to stay on the Nexium though. There are several different strengths of the pills available.

Q: Nexium does it cause liver damage or cancer?
This is a matter of great importance andI need some quick information for my mother believes that she may have liver cancer or something even worse because of Nexium. Any answers regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated.

A: Nexium (esomeprazole) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Clinical studies were presented to the FDA in August, 2007, after which they declared it does not cause any risk to the heart, which was the primary reason for the studies.

Q: Why do people still get a prescription for Nexium and pay extra for Nexium when Prilosec does the same thing?
Details: 1. I'm not a Prilosec Represenative or a user and I don't make any money from the sale of Prilosec OTC. 2. Prilosec can be bought without a prescription.

A: The same reason millions of people spend billions of dollars paying for brand name or newer drugs when generics or older drugs will do. Ignorance. Not saying they are dumb. Just saying that they lack knowledge in this area, or, have a fear that the brand name must be better. Also, drug reps are dropping off samples to MDs for newer drugs, MDs are giving the samples to patients, and patients are assuming that this is the one and only drug for their condition. It's really funny considering that Nexium is just the S- isomer of Prilosec. It's basically the same drug. My mom takes Clarinex. It's just an isomer of Claritin which is over the counter, generic and cheap. I cannot convince her to just buy some generic Claritin for a fraction of the cost of Clarinex. Not gonna happen. And, I'm a pharmacist. Addendum: Just read a response that Nexium might be more effective than Prilosec. Some studies have shown Nexium to be a little better. Some studies have shown no significant difference between Nexium and Prilosec. That still does not warrant trying the more expensive drug first. Prilosec was/is very sucessful because it works very well.

Q: When is the best time of day to take Nexium?
I've been taking it 30 minutes before dinner.

A: Heart burn meds Most meds are to be taken after meals

Q: Can anyone suggest an otc (over the counter) alternative to Nexium that is available in Canada?
This is used for an ulcer. My pharmacy (Pharmex Direct) did not deliver my script and I have run out.

A: Prilosec otc

Q: can you take prilocet otc for more than 2 weeks? what's the difference between prilocet otc and nexium?
Klinsmann, may I ask where you are located?

A: not much...both are proton pump inhibitors; the otc is less potent.. I usually recommend apple cider vinegar or a betaine supplement with meals to reduce reflux... If you take pp inhibitors for a while, you can become b12 deficient which leads to anemia. You can also develop raw spots on the stomach lining and you will not digest protein properly. In my opinion, they are extremely overprescribed and don't address the real problem in most cases which is a lack of stomach acid causing the indigestion and reflux. Increased acidity in the stomach stimulates the sphincter at the bottom of your esophogus to close tighter. Decreasing the acidity makes it relax...(basic physiology demonstrates how pp inhibitors are often the exact opposite of what is needed). I get people to where they stop needing these drugs all the time.

Q: How dangerous is Nexium to dogs?
I think my dog might have eaten some. All of the vets around here are closed. Help please? none of my emergency numbers are working, no one is picking up. All of the vet clinics are closed.

A: IF they tell you to induce vomitting, you can soak a smll piece of bread with hydrogen peroxide, and feed to her. It should make her throw up in about 10 minutes or so. But ONLY do this if they tell you to.
