Q: My mother takes aggrenox to prevent ministrokes and is experiencing headaches. Is this a normal sideeffect?
She has low blood pressure. She entered the hospital with numbness on her left side but there was no residual damage. But, now she is bothered by the sideeffects of headaches.

A: Headaches are listed on the side effect profile but, it says they may resolve themselves in time. Also, there are numerous medications that can interact with this drug. Review the list of drugs make sure your mother doesn't take any of them while she is on this drug. http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,776%7CAggrenox,00.html#howToTake Symptoms of low blood pressure to watch for include: Dizziness or lightheadedness Fainting (called syncope) Lack of concentration Blurred vision Nausea Cold, clammy, pale skin Rapid, shallow breathing Fatigue Depression Unusual thirst I would still suggest calling the Cardiologist & telling the nurse......even though the side effect is listed, I would get a second opinion on the drug & dosage to be on the safe side. Good luck!

Q: Which is best for strokes: Plavix or Aggrenox?
Wondering which medication is best if I had a stroke: I know some neurologists like Plavix, some like Aggrenox.

A: I've heard that there is evidence for both. It seems to depend who you ask. There is a Plavix camp and an Aggrenox camp. Unfortunately no head-to-head trials that everyone can agree on.

his physician has started him on Aggrenox. as you begin to ring up his prescription, along with a bottle of aspirin, he looks at the pt information sheet and says, " i didn't know this had aspirin in it. you can delete that from my order." you alert the pharmacist. Q: OK. So aspirin is NOT a lipid. so can someone please explain this to em?!?!?

Haha. (btw im in 9th grade living environment, sooooo. . . i havent learned a lot XD)

A: If you search for lipid on your page, it says lipid soluble, not lipid. That just means it's hydrophobic (no/very little ionic or polar-covalent characteristic). Aspirin is usually classified as a "drug," or in the case of willow trees, it'd be a "secondary metabolite." Not everything is a lipid, carbohydrate, fat, or protein; those are only primary biomolecules.

Q: can a patient take St Johns wort while in treatment with the following medications?
medications take : PAROXETINE 10MG 1 DAILY/ SIMVASTATIN 40MG 1 @ BEDTIME/DOXAZOSIN MESYLATE 1MG 1 DAILY/METFIRMIN 500MG 1 X 2 TIMES A DAY/ AMLIDIPINE BESYLATE 5MG 1 DAILY/ AGGRENOX CAP SA 25MG 200MG CAP 1 X 2 TIMES DAILY.. PLEASE HELP. MY DAD I VERY ANXIOUS thanks everyone. I'd better get in touch with the doc to go on the safe side.

A: Short answer: Do NOT take the wort along with paroxetine without telling your doctor! Longer answer: The number one drug on that list that will interact with St. John's wort is paroxetine. They both have anti-depressant effect and I believe that they even have a common mechanism of action (SSRI). This essentially means that by taking them both you're double-dosing and are potentially exposing yourself to a reaction known as serotonin syndrome in which your central nervous system becomes overloaded with serotonin and stops responding to it appropriately. This can cause clonic seizures, altered mentation, hyperthermia, and more and can be life-threatening. The initial stages of SS can be difficult to detect unless you know exactly what to look for. Basically you need to talk with your doctor and probably make a decision with them either to take the St. John's wort or to take the paroxetine but not both. Or, if he or she does agree to your taking both, then they'll probably want to know your exact dosage of wort and want you to carefully monitor your response to the combined drugs. Also, you have to consider that if paroxetine isn't working for you then you may just need to report that to your doctor and try either a different drug (there are a few kinds besides SSRIs and one may work better for you), light therapy, cognitive therapy, lifestyle changes (exercise?, hobbies?, social events?), or something else altogether. I think that none of the other medications you list really interact with St. John's wort appreciably, however there's a chance that the wort might increase the amount of amlodipine you need to be taking (by increasing how fast your body metabolizes it). Also the wort can interact to some degree with a wide range of drugs which your doctor might want to put you on at some future time. So, again, it's an absolute must that your doctor know about the wort.

Q: Is this a deadly combination of drugs?
My father was put into a nursing home after suffering a stroke. He is diabetic "type 2". He has high blood pressure. He has had constipation twice in a year that required an enema. It the following a recipe for disaster. Miralax 17g once daily Simvastatin 20mg once daily Zoloft 25mg once daily Aggrenox twice daily Aldactone 100mg twice daily Colace 100mg twice daily Lisinopril 20mg twice daily Metformin 500mg twice daily Prilosec liquid 40mg twice daily Wellburtrin 150mg twice daily Clonidine 0.3mg three times daily Reglan 10mg four times daily. Jevity is his feeding. Amount machince says on it's readout is 50 and he recieves 8 ounces of water a day. Is this a heathy combination.

A: This is a perfect question for his pharmacist, or any pharmacist. They are SO smart and helpful, and they know more about meds than many doctors! If you want to speak to a 24-hour pharmacist just look up "pharmacies" in the Yellow Pages. They have lots of ads. It's an excellent question, because some nursing homes are known for overmedicating and putting their patients in a daze. These homes should be sued and put out of business, or fix things! This would be a great time to talk with a pharmacist, because s/he wouldn't be too busy. You sound like a wonderful son. Best of luck to your father. :L

A: this is something you want to ask your doctor, especailly taking into account all these medications. your doctor will know best and will give you an accurate answer. you dont want to risk getting some fake answer over the internet. how could you really trust anyone?
